The beginning of 2018 saw a change in the team as Bob Quinn and the rest of the lions organization hired former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as head coach on February 5, 2018. A glaring need for the Lions over the past few years had been running back. To finally fix the issue, they signed LeGarrette Blount from the Philadelphia Eagles and drafted Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Lions struggled in the 2018 season as they posted a 6–10 record, finishing last in the NFC North. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooters contract was unrenwed after the season concluded.
The 2019 season began on January 16 with the hiring of Darrell Bevell as offensive coordinator. They then released safety Glover Quin, T. J. Lang, and cornerback Nevin Lawson. They signed ex-Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola to fill the hole left by Golden Tate and handed big contracts to ex-Patriots Justin Coleman and Trey Flowers. The team also signed tight end Jesse James from the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the draft, they drafted Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson and a developmental prospect in cornerback Amani Oruwariye.
