Neurosurgeons at Methodist Dallas Medical Center worked to remove a mass of blood vessels in the part of her brain that affects speech which has been causing her seizures. Doctors stimulated a location on Schardt's brain as she describes pictures and reads during the surgery so that they can observe what parts of the brain are being activated, and in turn, be cautious of those specific areas. As an occupational therapy student, Schardt works frequently with patients recovering from brain injuries. She says by broadcasting her own surgery and story, she hopes she can educate and help others understand brain malformations and how surgery can help those experiencing them.
