As mentioned by samsung, Samsung used a stronger aluminum than it had used in the past for the Galaxy S9. JerryRigEverything also pointed out that the Galaxy S9 also still uses Gorilla Glass 5 this year. So he conducted a durability test on the Galaxy S9 to see how strong the new aluminum combined with Gorilla Glass 5 would perform in comparison with other devices.
Based on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness with a scale of 2-9. The Galaxy S9 scratched at a level 6 and a deeper groove at a level 7. This is about the same “as other flagships.” The tempered glass on the front of the Galaxy S9 should not be damaged by coins, keys and razor blades unless pushed very hard. And the 8-megapixel front-facing camera is under the front glass so it is also protected from scratches.
JerryRigEverything scratched at the side of the device to verify that it is made out of a strong aluminum, proving it is more scratch resistant than before. And all the buttons on the side are also made from metal. Plus JerryRigEverything pointed out that the camera on the back of the S9 is where “some pretty significant improvements” have been made over the Galaxy S8.
