The Russian Makarov PM was a symbol of the Soviet Union. Everything from the cartridge to the pistol design was an overhaul in the 50's for a newer, more robust, easily maintained pistol with a safety. The straight blow-back action used the 9x18mm makarov cartridge, similar to the Walther PP in 9mm Kurz.
We've shot the PPK in 9mm Kurz in the past and it had horrible ergonomics, high recoil... and performed poorly on the course. What about the Soviet take on the direct-blowback action?
In true communist fashion, this pistol was manufactured by the Ernst Thälmann "Automobile and Hunting Weapons factory" in Suhl, East Germany. The DDR state-owned factory made two-wheeled vehicles, hunting rifles, air rifles, Makarov pistols and Kalashnikov rifles.
