Pallas' Cat is more closely related to house cats than many wild cats (though not as close as some) but still split off from any of it's ancestors 5 to 6 million years ago. For comparison, our ancestors were still interbreeding with the ancestors of chimpanzees six million years ago.
But they do have this one strange feature that doesn't make any sense. But despite the fact that it probably doesn't help them survive, it does make them cute to humans...so if it convinces us to keep captive breeding programs...this less-than-useless attribute may actually (oddly enough) save them.
