Many people out there, both children and adults, dream of starting and having a family of their own. Being a parent can be one of the most rewarding experiences life has to offer. The bond you share with your child, even before he or she is even born, is something people can never understand until they become parents themselves. But sadly, 1 in 10 couples who try to have children of their own, are unable to because of various health or genetic complications. Ten percent may not seem like a huge figure, but when you factor in how many people there are on this planet, that number appears to be a lot larger than many could have ever imagined. Fortunately, sometimes just by continuing to try and not giving up, some couples are able to beat the odds and have children of their own. Unfortunately, sometimes couples keep trying and eventually get what they want, but at such a huge cost.
Kiera Meldrum, a 20-year-old woman, was delighted to learn that she was once again pregnant in July 2018. She and her partner had been trying to have kids for quite some time now. In fact, the couple endured the loss of approximately 14 failed pregnancies. Most couples are devastated over the loss of just a single pregnancy, imagine having to experience that 14 times. Most couples would have probably given up at that point, but Kiera and her partner absolutely refused to do so.
About 5 months into the pregnancy, doctors had some really bad news. They told Kiera that her unborn baby was suffering from a very serious medical condition. The unborn child had Grade 3 severe ascites to the intestine, a condition that causes an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Doctors broke this news to Kiera at her 21-week scan and urged her to consider canceling the pregnancy so that the child doesn't have to suffer or be in pain. Despite the warnings and controversy surrounding the decision, Kiera refused to give up on her baby and refused to cancel the pregnancy.
"I felt sick when they told me she wasn't well, but I just knew my little girl was a fighter and that she could make it,” she recalled. "There was no way I was canceling my pregnancy — I'd waited so long to become a mom and I was determined to do all I could to protect my baby." A decision that many that have been in her position before disagreed with but couldn't do anything more because ultimately the choice wasn't up to them.
At 28 weeks, another disaster struck. The unborn baby's intestine had ruptured causing amniotic to build up inside Kiera. Doctors once again urged her to cancel the pregnancy because of the health risks involved for herself, and even more so because of the immense amount of pain all of this was causing her unborn baby.
“My stomach swelled up enormously, and it felt like I was carrying a giant painful water balloon against my tummy. Doctors said that draining the fluid could hurt my baby, and after being told how poorly she already was, I knew I couldn't do anything risky,” Kiera told SWNS.
"I was in constant pain, but I had to do everything I could to protect my baby or I'd never forgive myself."
But once again, Kiera refused to give up on her baby and accepted everything that came with her decision to do so. Many people who were aware of the situation couldn't help but be a bit upset because it seemed as though Kiera cared more about becoming a parent than she did about what her unborn baby had to go through in order for that to happen. Others commended Kiera for accepting the risks involved and giving her baby a fighting chance at life.
In February 2019, about 34 weeks into her pregnancy, Kiera went into labor and gave birth to her daughter. The little girl came out only weighing about 4 pounds and required emergency surgery shortly after she was born to repair her ruptured intestine. She then had to stay at the hospital inside of an incubator for approximately the first 8 weeks of her life. After yet another surgery on top of what the little girl already had to endure, she was finally cleared and allowed to go home for the first time.
The little girl will require extensive check-ups every month to make sure that her intestine is healing, but Kiera says she seems to be doing better and better each day while getting seemingly stronger and stronger.
“Doctors told me every week to cancel my pregnancy, and hearing that advice over and over again was horrific, but something told me Lillee-Rose would make it through,” she said. "My baby girl never stopped fighting and finally having her home with me is a blessing. She's my little miracle."
