New Market is a market in kolkata situated on Lindsay Street. Today in local parlance, the entire shopping area is often known as "New Market ". It is opened in the year 1874, 1st January, owned by kolkata Municipal Corporation, the architect was Richard Roskell Bayne, he designed this Victorian Gothic market complex and Bayne was honoured for his achievement with Rs. 1, 000 rupees award, a huge sum in that time.
The news of Calcutta's first municipal market spread allover rapidly. Affluent colonials from all over India started shopping at exclusive retailers in this market.
28 years later, on 2nd December 1903, the market was officially named Sir Stuart Hogg market, who was the chairman of Calcutta Corporation. Later it is shortened as Hogg Market. But the earliest provisional nickname, New Market, proved to have the most sticking power.
Presently there are many Shopping mall's in kolkata but still this is one of the most famous shopping destination to a large number of shopping lovers.
