We chose Bradwell On Sea on the Essex coast for this years birthday celebrations, a place I have walked and wild camped at many times. I love the area. It feels so isolated and secret, as if forgotten about when people think of Essex.
We did a 7 mile circular walk around the top of the Dengie Peninsula along the River Blackwater estuary and its sea wall. We of course visited the ancient chapel of St. Peter's On The Wall, also the site of the Roman Saxon Shore Fort of Othona and the present day Christian Community of the same name. We passed the decommissioned Bradwell Nuclear Power Station and stopped at the pub in Bradwell Waterside before passing the marina and the war memorial to the WWII Bradwell Bay airfield, before heading into Bradwell On Sea village to the pub and back to our cars at the chapel car park.
Here we donned our wild camping rucksacks as well as a sack barrow loaded with firewood and other "glamping essentials" and headed back down to the cockle spit beach near the chapel and fort for a wonderful beach wild camp complete with campfire, presents, birthday cake and beers and ciders and warm food. We needed it as the temperatures dropped as low as -3 degrees! Luckily we had our tents and winter sleeping equipment.
I had some new gear to test out too. Thank you to Candice, James and Bella and Mark for the presents and your company and making this a birthday to never forget!
