WHAT'S IT LIKE LANDING IN RIYADH AND SAUDI ARABIA FOR THE FIRST TIME AS A SOLO, FEMALE TRAVELLER ON AN INDEPENDENT TRIP?? Well, for me it looked like this, a few up and downs but generally surprisingly easy and welcoming! My arrival at Riyadh Airport was really good and I got a sim card in Riyadh Airport so easily followed by an Uber into the city and my hotel.
Accommodation in Riyadh isn’t the best for budget travellers like me as most hotels are expensive and many have low ratings, even the expensive ones! I stayed in Obaer Hotel:
I got an Uber to Deera Square to see Masmak Fort and the Grand Mosque there. Masmak Fort was good to see and is free to enter but I was not allowed in the mosque. I visited this area after sunset and felt a bit uncomfortable even though I’m sure it is totally safe, I would advise travellers to visit during the day.
The next day I went up the Kingdom Tower to the Skybridge which I loved! This is one of the top things to do in Riyadh in my opinion! I then got an Uber to the National Museum of Saudi Arabia which I also really enjoyed and learnt a lot in.
Following this I went to meet my couch surfing host in the hope of the chance to see a more local side of the city.
Overall, my first impressions of Riyadh were good. I was surprised at how comfortable I felt and I met some lovely people. The big negative about tourism in Riyadh is how hard and expensive it is to get around as everything is so spread out with no public transport.
