The precise differences between Sanitary Landfills and Open Dumps have been explained in this video. The concept of sanitary landfill originated in 1935 in Fresno California. Open Dumps are highly dangerous for the environment as they pollute groundwater and nearby soil whereas a sanitary landfill is isolated from the soil though plastic and clay lining. The gas recovery system is provided in sanitary landfill as complete isolation of methane may lead to explosion. Also a leachate collection system is provided in the sanitary landfill so that liquid waste deposited at the bottom of sanitary landfill can be removed from it. Watch the video for full detailss.
