French seams are strong and robust and are often found on men's shirts. They are also great for delicate or sheer fabrics such as silk and chiffon. They neatly encase the seam allowances within themselves so there are no raw edges inside the garment and are very easy to sew.
Firstly you break convention and sew the seam with the wrong sides of the garment together with a 1/4" seam.
Press the stitches flat, press the seam open and then press the fabric right sides together along the seamline.
Stitch a seam 3/8" from the folded edge to encase the original seam nice and neatly.
