The Altered Scale is the 7th mode of the Melodic Minor scale and it's one of my favorite scales to play whenever faced with a resolving Dominant chord. the way the scale works is as if at looking at the intervallic construction as Dominant Guide Tones (1, 3, b7) with the added altered extensions (b2, #2, b5, #5). The end result is 1 b2 #2 3 b5 #5 b7.
In the video I show 3 different ways to learn the scale; scale diagrams (which you can fin on my Patreon account), the intervallic construction and finally the parent scale relationship.
