Australians spend $11bn on illicit drugs Australians are spending more than $11 billion a year on illicit drugs, according to a study of the nation's wastewater.

The data - based on 57 per cent of the population - shows Australians are using more ice, cocaine, MDMA and heroin.

The figure is an increase of nearly $2 billion in the past year with 76 per cent spent on more than 11 tonnes of methylamphetamine.

Sydney is consuming less alcohol but remains the highest consumer of drugs in all states and territories.
