The actress died at the age of 49 after she was fatally shot by officers during a welfare check in August 2018. Vanessa was best known for playing nurse Wendy Goldman in ER between 1994 and 1997. In a video shared by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Vanessa can be seen sitting in her bedroom, which was described as being in "hoarding conditions" and "in complete disarray". The officers tell her she's being taken into custody for her own safety but she says "I'm not going" before pulling out a pair of scissors and what looked like a pistol, which was later found to be a BB gun, from her handbag. She's got a gun. Gun! Gun! Gun!" The police back out of the apartment before they can be heard pleading with her to drop the gun as they wait at the bottom of the stairs. Shannon Presby, head deputy district attorney, said in a memo: "In this incident, the evidence demonstrates that Carrillo and Perez actually and reasonably believed Marquez posed an imminent threat of great bodily injury or death."
