You might have just recently created your WordPress site and noticed that on your first blog post, you have a couple options you can add onto your post to improve the site’s organization.

The first thing I want to take a look at is the Categories option. Categories on your WordPress site work kind of similar to chapters in a book. A chapter usually contains information about a specific story and the same is to be said with WordPress categories. Categories on WordPress help improve your site’s search engine optimization or SEO for short. When creating categories, it’s best to name them according to the content you plan to create and post on your blog. For my example, we’re taking a look at my WordPress site, a blog about Chevrolet’s iconic Camaro of the 1980s. For this example, I have created a simple blog post that houses information about the trim packages that were available for this vehicle. In the categories section I’ll add a category for Background Information.

Let’s come back to categories in a moment, while we’re on this page there’s an additional drop-down for Tags. Tags are extremely useful in developing a WordPress site, tags help to increase SEO. Tags aren’t seen or used by users as often as Categories are, but maintaining your tags is essential to your blog.

Now that we have at least one tag and one category applied to this post, let’s see what changes for users that visit our page.
