Internet Gaming Disorder was not something I was taught when I was in graduate school, because I went to school from 2007-2009 and the internet wasn’t as advanced as it is now, and also internet gaming disorder wasn’t in the DSM, or it wasn’t back then. In May of 2013 when the new edition of the DSM was released it included a section called “conditions for further study” which had many proposed diagnoses and their criteria, and it mentions that it’s not supposed to be used for clinical purposes at this time. And Internet Gaming Disorder falls into this section of the DSM, so we will have to see if any new research persuades those at the American Psychological Association into adding it to the DSM’s next edition.
