Britain accelerates a ban on the sale of all petrol, diesel and hybrid cars by 5 years | ABC News Britain is forging ahead with an ambitious pledge to curb greenhouse gas emissions by banning the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars.

By 2035 - 5 years earlier than expected - people in the UK will only be able to buy electric or hydrogen cars and vans.

The government says it's necessary to fight the climate crisis and bring carbon emissions to 'net zero' by 2050.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and naturalist David Attenborough spoke during a launch event for the next UN climate change conference - COP26 - to be held in Glasgow in November.
