How to Administer a Secondary IV Infusion via Piggyback

How to Administer a Secondary IV Infusion via Piggyback NURSE 3530

Methylprednisolone
50 mg
IV piggyback

1. In reviewing the patient information and PDM, I should have verbalized the patient's diagnosis before giving the medication and I should have verbalized that the dose is in a safe range, as well as acknowledge that it can be given by a student nurse. Although I explained the indication for giving the medication at the bed side, I should have verbalized before preparing the medication.

2. When at the bedside, I did not verbally imply the patient's right to refuse enough. In reality, I would tell the patient that they do not have to comply.

3. When I said that I will return when the medication is done infusing, I should have indicted that I will return to ensure that the primary infusion has restarted. This is what I was implying but I was not explicit enough.
