So we’re going to help tackle scapular dyskinesis or SICK scapula, which is a malposition of the shoulder blades that also affects its function and movement.
Common symptoms of this include anterior shoulder pain, pain around the shoulder blades and upper back, a low shoulder, and winged scapula (which can be very unsightly).
These exercises are going to target a main instigator of scapular winging and dyskinesis, which is the serratus anterior muscle.
Why this muscle is so important is because it functions to pull the scapula forward around the chest. Another big role of the serratus anterior is to help keep the scapula flush against the rib cage and aid in shoulder stability.
As you can see, any issues with this muscle can definitely lead to future problems with the shoulder blades.
So if you are having issues with scapular dyskinesis or winging of scapula, these exercises might be a good place to start and see if it can be improved by targeting the serratus anterior muscle.
These exercises are straightforward and easy to do. They'll be shown in a three step progression, so make sure to try them all to get the most out of it.
Let’s get started and fix those shoulder blades that are sticking out!
